Adopt-A-Spot and Community Cleanups (ongoing)

Keep Norfolk Beautiful relies on the hard work of our volunteers to help us Keep Norfolk Beautiful. Through the Adopt-A-Spot and Community Cleanup programs, volunteers have the opportunity to conduct cleanups around the city. The Adopt-A-Spot program asks that groups or individuals conduct a cleanup every three months at a designated location. Community Cleanups offer volunteers an opportunity to plan their own cleanups. Keep Norfolk Beautiful will provide trash bags, gloves, trash grabbers, safety vests, Cleanup report forms, sign in sheets and training for both programs.

Spring Clean Out to Clean Up (Norfolk Recycles Day)

Each spring, in April, Keep Norfolk Beautiful and Waste Management partner for Clean Out to Clean Up. With the help of volunteers, Eggleston, and Good Will, residents have an opportunity to participate in a drive through drop off of their unwanted items. Waste Management collects Household Hazardous Waste and E-Cycling, Eggleston takes documents for shredding, and Goodwill takes clothing and home goods donations. Each year there are special giveaways for participating residents. Don’t want to wait until spring? Not to worry, Clean Out to Clean Up also takes place in November!

Great American Cleanup

Every year from March through May Keep Norfolk Beautiful and our partners come together for a spring time litter cleanup campaign. It’s the perfect time of year to get outside and prevent litter from entering our waterways and improve the overall aesthetics of our beautiful city. Volunteers can conduct their own cleanups, join a group, or participate in one of our events. Events include Norfolk planting day, Clean Out to Clean Up, Keep Norfolk Beautiful day, and Earth Month.

Clean The Bay Day

Clean the Bay Day has become an area tradition. In partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Keep Norfolk Beautiful and volunteer leaders host cleanups throughout the city on the first Saturday in June. The goal: Clean the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Though the focus is on preventing litter in marine environments, it’s important to remember where that litter came from. Probably just up the road or maybe it came from miles away. By land or by sea Clean the Bay Day has become an important and fun summer event in Norfolk. We look forward to seeing you this year!

The International Coastal Cleanup

At Keep Norfolk Beautiful we like to welcome fall with two months full of litter cleanup opportunities. September through October is the International Coastal Cleanup. Keep Norfolk Beautiful and volunteer site leaders host cleanups throughout the city. But, this isn’t your average cleanup.
The International Coastal Cleanup involves citizen science. Volunteers work in teams and use litter tracking sheets to track the various types of litter being picked up. This event happens around the world and provides valuable data on what the current litter issues are. Keep Norfolk Beautiful, The Ocean Conservancy, Clean Virginia Waterways, and Keep America Beautiful use this data to help with education and litter messages. It is thanks to our volunteers and partners that we are able to host such an amazing and interesting event.
