NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Norfolk police detectives are investigating an afternoon hit and run crash that left a man dead.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m., Norfolk police and fire-rescue responded to the 300 block of E. Princess Anne Road for a motor vehicle accident.  Upon arrival, they located a man lying in the roadway suffering from severe injuries.  The man was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, but was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

The man’s identity will be release publicly once his family is properly notified.

The preliminary investigation confirms the man was driving his moped westbound in the 300 block of E. Princess Anne Road when he was struck by a blue SUV or mini-van.  The driver of the suspect vehicle fled from the area and was last seen traveling northbound on Armistead Avenue near the intersection of E. Princess Anne Road and Monticello Avenue.  The blue SUV or mini-van has heavy front-end damage as a result of the accident.

Police encourage anyone who may have been in the area during the crash or believe to have seen the SUV or mini-van matching the suspect vehicle description to contact 911 or call the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

Additionally, the Norfolk Police Department would like to thank the members of our Norfolk community who stayed on scene and assisted during this fatal accident until first responders arrived.  We appreciate your willingness to help not only the investigation, but the man in need.
