Norfolk, VA (Aug. 14, 2020) – A temporary statewide moratorium on eviction proceedings in Virginia has been enacted by Governor Ralph Northam, starting Aug. 10 through Sept. 7, 2020. In addition, Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority (NRHA) is waiving any fees associated with late rent payments during this time. While this halts all eviction proceedings related to failure to pay rent, NRHA wants to remind residents rent continues to be due the first of each month. All unpaid rent will also be due at the end of the moratorium.
This means rent paid after the first of every month after the end of the moratorium will be late and may ensue fees. Evictions for nonpayment of rent and other fees will continue after Sept. 7. In addition, any accumulated unpaid rent from March 27-Sept. 7 will be due at the end of the moratorium, and eviction proceedings that were put on hold prior to March 27, 2020, also will then continue.
If a resident has lost their job or has had a significant loss of income, they are encouraged to contact their property management office immediately. NRHA may be able to adjust their rent to reflect the change in income or they maybe eligible for a financial hardship exemption.
