Man Sentenced to More Than 3 Years for Norfolk Auto Theft
NORFOLK, Va. – On Friday, 26-year-old Da'quan Kentrell Cherry was sentenced in Norfolk Circuit Court to three years and eight months in prison for receiving stolen goods after he was caught driving a stolen truck in 2023.
On Jan. 15, 2023, Norfolk Police received an automated notice from Norfolk’s FLOCK camera system that a 2004 Toyota Tundra that was reported stolen from an Estabrook-area home was being driven near East Brambleton Avenue. Nearby patrol officers followed the vehicle into Chesapeake and observed Mr. Cherry driving the truck into an apartment complex parking lot. There, Mr. Cherry abruptly slowed down and jumped out of the driver's seat of the vehicle. As he fled on foot, the truck rolled into a tree. Mr. Cherry was caught and detained by the officers.
On June 6, Mr. Cherry pleaded guilty to the felony charge of receiving stolen goods, and Judge Everett A. Martin Jr. accepted his plea.
Mr. Cherry has multiple prior felony convictions — including for grand theft auto, grand larceny, and burglary — and the Commonwealth requested that the Court consider a sentence of three years and eight months, which was the high-end of Mr. Cherry’s sentencing guidelines.
On Sept. 29, Judge Martin sentenced Mr. Cherry in accordance with the Commonwealth’s recommendation on the condition that Mr. Cherry complete three years of post-release supervision.
“We have held Mr. Cherry accountable for stealing this victim’s car. Thank you to the Norfolk Police for their hard work and for once again using the FLOCK camera system to make a prompt and targeted arrest,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi. “But the best medicine is prevention, and as citizens we all must do our part to prevent auto theft: Lock your car. Do not leave your car running unattended. Take your keys. Do not leave valuables visible. And do not leave your gun in your car.”
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Madeline C. Woodruff led the sentencing of Mr. Cherry’s case on behalf of the Commonwealth.
