Man Sentenced to 2½ Years for Robbing Norfolk Credit Union via Note
NORFOLK, Va. – Ricky Jerrell Johnson, 45, was sentenced on Friday in Norfolk Circuit Court to two and a half years in prison for robbery by threat after he robbed a bank teller by passing them a threatening note last year.
On June 2, 2023, Mr. Johnson handed a Chartway Credit Union teller a note claiming that he had a gun and that he would shoot them if they did not give him cash. The teller complied with the robbery threat, put cash as well as a tracker inside a bag, and Mr. Johnson left the bank with the bag. Norfolk Police later located Mr. Johnson, who was not armed at the time, arrested him, and charged him with robbery by threat.
On Nov. 17, Mr. Johnson pleaded guilty as charged, and Judge Mary Jane Hall accepted his plea with no agreement to his sentence. On Friday, Judge Hall sentenced Mr. Johnson to two years and six months in prison, with another two years and six months suspended on the condition that Mr. Johnson complete three years of uniform good behavior following his release.
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney A. Robinson Winn prosecuted Mr. Johnson’s case on behalf of the Commonwealth, and Norfolk Police Detective A. R. Kay led the investigation.

Man Convicted of Robbing Norfolk Credit Union with Threatening Note

On June 2, Mr. Johnson robbed a Chartway Credit Union teller by handing them a note claiming that he had a gun and that he would shoot them if they did not comply with his demand for cash. The teller gave him cash in a bag with a tracker inside, and Mr. Johnson left the bank. Norfolk Police later located Mr. Johnson, who was not armed at the time, and arrested him.
On Friday, Mr. Johnson pleaded guilty as charged of robbery by threat, and Judge Mary Jane Hall accepted his plea with no agreement to his sentence. Mr. Johnson is docketed for sentencing on Feb. 9.
