[ARCHIVED] February is Black History Month

Black History Month

February is Black History Month. It's a time to showcase the history, stories and contributions of African Americans.

Did you know that before Black History Month, there was Negro History Week? Carter G. Woodson, a Virginia-born Black historian, founded the week to shine a light on the often-overlooked achievements of African Americans.

Fun Fact: The first Negro History Week was celebrated during a week in February 1926 that aligned with the birthdays of two icons of freedom: President Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass. That's why we celebrate Black History Month in February!

Jump to 1976, and the celebration expanded into a month-long event. Since then, February has been a time to honor the history and impact of African Americans.

This month, join us as we explore Norfolk's Black history and highlight Black History Month events.

Stay tuned.
