Man Sentenced to 6 Years for Robbing Norfolk Woman of Her Pocketbook
NORFOLK, Va. — Kevin Dennis Moon Jr., 36, was sentenced today in Norfolk Circuit Court to six years in prison for snatching a woman’s pocketbook and injuring her inside a convenience store last year.
On June 16, 2023, the 62-year-old victim was using the skill and entertainment game machine inside a 7-Eleven on Tidewater Drive when Mr. Moon reached over her head and attempted to snatch her pocketbook and phone that she had been holding in her hand. The woman kept a strong grip on her items, and Mr. Moon dragged her to the floor in his attempt to snatch them from her, resulting in her tearing a ligament in her ankle and receiving numerous bruises.
After successfully wrestling the items from the victim, Mr. Moon fled in his vehicle. An eyewitness followed the vehicle long enough to get the license plate number and provided it to responding Norfolk Police officers. The officers took the victim’s statement, got security footage from the 7-Eleven, and entered the vehicle information into the FLOCK system.
Two days later, officers received a FLOCK alert on Mr. Moon’s vehicle and pulled Mr. Moon over. Mr. Moon was taken into custody and confessed to robbing the woman inside 7-Eleven.
Following a bench trial on Dec. 11, Judge Mary Jane Hall found Mr. Moon guilty of robbery by force. Today, Judge Hall sentenced Mr. Moon to six years in prison, with an additional four years suspended conditioned upon Mr. Moon completing four years of uniform good behavior and an indeterminate period of supervised probation upon his release. Mr. Moon must also pay $500 in restitution to the victim.
“I express my appreciation to the victim for testifying in court and to the Norfolk Police for their fine work in the case,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi. “With witness cooperation, good police work, and technology like FLOCK, we are able to hold people accountable and help make our community safer.”
Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott C. Vachris prosecuted Mr. Moon’s case on behalf of the Commonwealth, and Norfolk Police Officer Stephen P. West led the investigation.
