Trigger Warning: Domestic Violence
Man Sentenced to Year in Jail for Brandishing Gun During Domestic Assault
NORFOLK, Va. – Carlito Ramone Jordan, 24, was sentenced on Wednesday to serve a year in jail for misdemeanor brandishing after he pulled out a gun during a domestic altercation last year.
On the night of Feb. 13, 2023, Mr. Jordan and the victim had an argument that turned physical when Mr. Jordan began assaulting the victim. During that altercation, Mr. Jordan pointed a gun at the victim and threatened her with it. After the incident, the victim secured warrants against Mr. Jordan for domestic assault and brandishing.
In May 2024, Mr. Jordan pleaded guilty in Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court to brandishing and assault and battery of a family member, and he was sentenced on the brandishing charge to serve 12 months in the Norfolk City Jail (the maximum sentence for a misdemeanor in Virginia). Mr. Jordan later appealed the brandishing conviction to Norfolk Circuit Court.
On Wednesday, Mr. Jordan pleaded guilty to brandishing, and his defense counsel argued for a sentence shorter than 12 months. Judge Joseph C. Lindsey found Mr. Jordan guilty of brandishing and, considering Mr. Jordan’s criminal history, sentenced him to serve the maximum 12 months in jail. The judge ordered that the sentence could be reviewed only if Mr. Jordan first completes an anger management program.
“Once again, we see a misdemeanor offense — pulling a gun and threatening to shoot a victim — that is far more serious than many felonies, but Virgnia prosecutors receive no funding to put a prosecutor on any misdemeanor cases, no matter how dangerous,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi. “Thanks to financial assistance from City Council and grants, we staffed this case. Thanks to the cooperation of the victim in this case and the work of our team at the Norfolk Family Justice Center, we were able to hold Mr. Jordan accountable for his dangerous actions.”
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney M. Colston Jones prosecuted Mr. Jordan’s case on behalf of the Commonwealth.
