Jury Convicts 3 Brothers of Mob Assault, Robbery of Man at Ocean View Motel in 2023
NORFOLK, Va. — A jury convicted three brothers, Kailub Daionte Jefferson, Kevin Daikeem Jefferson and Khory Dalandre Jefferson, on Thursday of maliciously wounding a man in a mob assault, convicted two of the brothers of robbing the man, and convicted one of the brothers of being a felon in possession of a firearm after the trio jumped the victim in the parking lot of an Ocean View motel last summer.
On Aug. 15, 2023, the victim was visiting friends staying at the Ocean View Inn when he briefly encountered Kevin Jefferson in the parking lot. Mr. Jefferson mistakenly accused the victim of being associated with his girlfriend on social media, which the victim denied, and the two parted ways.
The following afternoon, on Aug. 16, the victim again saw Mr. Jefferson outside the motel with his two younger brothers, Khory and Kailub Jefferson. Kevin Jefferson and the victim spoke again, and the victim offered to check his social media accounts to confirm that he was not acquainted with Mr. Jefferson’s girlfriend. While the victim was looking at his phone, Mr. Jefferson punched the victim in his face and started a fistfight with the victim. The victim eventually pulled out a knife, and the fight ended soon thereafter.
As the victim attempted to leave the parking lot, Khory Jefferson displayed a firearm and accused the victim of having stolen from Kevin Jefferson. The three brothers then jumped the victim for several minutes — stomping the victim, kicking his head, and beating him with the gun — and robbed him of his personal effects including his jewelry, car keys, and sneakers. The victim escaped the three brothers only after crawling across a busy five-lane roadway and breaking into a nearby residence to ensure his physical safety. The entirety of the beating and robbery was documented by motel security cameras.
After about four hours of deliberation, the jury found Kailub, Kevin and Khory Jefferson guilty as charged of malicious wounding by mob; the jury found Kailub and Khory Jefferson guilty of robbery; and the jury found Khory Jefferson guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. All three are set for sentencing before Judge Robert B. Rigney on Oct. 4.
“When brothers take care of each other the right way, they are family. Here, brothers got together and committed serious felonies, and that is a crime,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi. “The victim in this incident endured an unjustified and brutal beating. Thanks to his cooperation, high-quality video footage, and solid police work, a jury has held the defendants accountable. At sentencing we will seek a sentence that will protect the community and fit the crimes these three brothers have committed.”
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Adam L. LaFon is prosecuting the Jefferson brothers’ cases on behalf of the Commonwealth, and Norfolk Police Detective Andrew J. Jowdy led the investigation.
