Trigger Warning: Child Sexual Abuse
Man Sentenced to 19 Years Following Jury Conviction of Sexually Abusing Norfolk Child in His Care
NORFOLK, Va. — Travis Davon Brown, 34, was sentenced on Friday to serve 19 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of forcibly sodomizing a 7-year-old child who previously in his care. The victim disclosed to her grandmother, child protective services, Norfolk Police, and forensic specialists in 2022 the degree of grooming and abuse Mr. Brown had committed, and she testified to Mr. Brown’s abuse at trial.
Mr. Brown pleaded not guilty to his charges — one count of raping a child under age 13 as well as multiple counts of object sexual penetration of a child under age 13 and sodomizing a child under age 13 — and opted for a jury trial. On July 24, the jury found Mr. Brown guilty of one count of forcible sodomy.
On Friday, Judge Jamilah D. LeCruise, who presided over Mr. Brown’s jury trial, sentenced Mr. Brown to serve 19 years in prison and suspended another 11 years on the conditions that Mr. Brown register as a sex offender, complete 10 years of uniform good behavior and supervised probation following his release, and have no contact with the victim.
“There is a time and a place for a long prison sentence. This case is one of them,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi. “Mr. Brown hurt an innocent child in his care. There is no excuse, no justification, for doing so. He has earned his time in custody, which will protect other children from the danger Mr. Brown poses to them. We are judged as a society on whether we protect our children, and we will continue to do all we can to hold accountable those who abuse children.”
Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Michelle L. Newkirk and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Abigail L. Ottinger prosecuted Mr. Brown’s case on behalf of the Commonwealth, and Norfolk Police Detective Ryan B. Davis led the investigation.
