[ARCHIVED] Norfolk Public Library Celebrates the 103rd Anniversary of the Blyden Branch

NORFOLK, Va. – On Friday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Oct. 5, Norfolk Public Library will host the “Come Home to Blyden Weekend Celebration,” commemorating the 103rd anniversary of Virginia’s first municipally supported public library for Black residents.  

The Blyden Branch is a cornerstone of the Barberton, Huntersville and other surrounding historic neighborhoods. Becky Livas, Hampton Roads first Black female television reporter, will act as the Mistress of Ceremonies.

Friday, Oct. 4, 7 p.m.
 
A Musical Celebration at The Attucks Theatre will include watching the Blyden Branch‘s historical journey. The event is free and open to the public.

Saturday, Oct. 5, noon
 
Community Day will take place in the green space next to the Blyden Branch. There will be displays and exhibits from community partners, vendors and performers, as well as food, yard games, school supplies giveaways and a book sale.
