[ARCHIVED] Woman charged following shooting involving Norfolk Police Officers on Sewells Point Road

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Norfolk Police have charged a 37-year-old woman in connection with an ongoing investigation. 

On April 25th around 1:55 p.m., Norfolk Police were called to the 800 block of E Little Creek Road for the report of a disorderly person. It had been reported that a woman who had been involved in an assault on April 24th had returned to the area. 

Police found the woman, later identified as Charlene D. Carey-Chavez, 37, of Norfolk, in the 7600 block of Sewells Point Road, near Avenue J. 

When officers encountered Carey-Chavez, she produced a weapon and failed to comply with commands from Officers to drop the weapon.

Officers discharged their service weapons, and Carey-Chavez sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound.

As a result of the investigation, detectives charged Carey-Chavez with assault and battery, grand larceny, and brandishing a firearm.

She remains in the hospital receiving medical treatment and will be taken to Norfolk City Jail upon her release. 

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation was requested to respond to the scene and is continuing to investigate the shooting involving Norfolk Police. 

No Officers were injured during this incident.
