[ARCHIVED] October is National Pedestrian Safety Month

NORFOLK, Va. – (NPD) The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recognizes October as National Pedestrian Safety Month, and the Norfolk Police Department is partnering with NHTSA to encourage safe driving practices and increased pedestrian safety.

According to NHTSA, on average a pedestrian is killed every 72 minutes, and one is injured every eight minutes due to traffic crashes.

Since January of 2025, Norfolk Police have responded to 26 crashes involving pedestrians, all of which have resulted in injuries to the pedestrian.

Five of those 26 crashes have been fatal for the pedestrians involved.

Drivers are urged to always use extra caution on the roadways during times of reduced visibility, as 77 percent of pedestrian crash fatalities nationwide in 2023 occurred after dark.

Norfolk Police are using this month to remind drivers to always obey posted speed signs and maintain lower speeds in areas where there is an increase in pedestrian foot traffic such as: neighborhoods, business districts, school zones, and near busy intersections.

Pedestrians also play a vital role in roadway safety and can do their part by following these simple steps to reduce risk:

  • Being alert and avoiding distractions such as cell phones or headphones
  • Using crosswalks when available
  • Wearing bright or reflective clothing and using a flashlight in low-light conditions
  • Making eye contact with drivers before stepping into the roadway
