NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – With Halloween upon us, the Norfolk Police Department reminds residents to prioritize safety while enjoying tonight’s festivities.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian fatalities are 43 percent higher on Halloween night than on any other evening of the year.
Specifically, in Virginia, there were 497 crashes resulting in four fatalities and 29 serious injuries on the night of Halloween last year.
Drivers play a critical role in keeping Halloween safe. NHTSA’s “See and Be Seen” campaign recommends the following tips for drivers to keep in mind:
- Slow down in residential neighborhoods. Expect children to appear suddenly between parked cars or at crosswalks.
- Stay alert and scan the road constantly. Avoid distractions like phones or loud music.
- Watch for costumes that may limit visibility. Children may not see or hear your vehicle approaching.
- Never drive impaired. If you plan to drink, arrange a sober ride home in advance.
NHTSA also provides safety tips for trick-or-treaters, with visibility and awareness being key factors.
- Wear bright or reflective costumes. Consider adding glow sticks or reflective tape to increase visibility.
- Use sidewalks and crosswalks. Avoid walking in the street and always look both ways before crossing.
- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Don’t assume they see you.
- Carry a flashlight. It helps you see and be seen.
As always, Norfolk Police will be on patrol throughout the evening to help ensure everyone's safety; however, families are encouraged to pre-plan routes, stay in well-lit areas, and report any suspicious activity by calling 757-441-5610.
