NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – As October ends, so does the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month.
This nationwide initiative aims to reduce pedestrian-related crashes and promote safer roads for all.
Throughout October, Norfolk Police engaged in targeted enforcement efforts to encourage safe driving and pedestrian habits.
As part of these efforts, Traffic Officers issued 10 citations to drivers who were observed operating their vehicles while holding a cell phone – an action that endangers both drivers and pedestrians.
Encouragingly, there has been a decline in crashes involving pedestrians over the past three months. In August, 12 incidents were recorded. That number dropped to six in September, and four crashes were reported in October.
Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month may be over, but the Norfolk Police Department reminds everyone that roadway safety is a year-round responsibility.
Drivers are urged to stay alert and avoid distractions while driving, and pedestrians should remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines when navigating city streets.
