[ARCHIVED] Man drowns in Elizabeth River

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., 9-1-1 dispatchers received a call for a drowning victim in the 400 block of College Place.

Upon arrival, police found two men in the Elizabeth River that appeared to be in distress. One of the men was yelling for help and the other man was unresponsive.

Three Norfolk Police Officers jumped into the water and were able to pull them both out.

The Officers attempted rescue efforts on the unresponsive man until Norfolk Paramedics arrived and took over.

Both men were subsequently transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

The 23-year-old unresponsive man died at the hospital.

The second man is in stable condition.

The identity of the drowning victim will not be released until next of kin notification is made.

At this time, it is unclear why the men were in the water.
