[ARCHIVED] Car thieves take child to school

Shortly after 8:00 this morning, Norfolk Police responded to a call for service regarding a stolen vehicle in the 400 block of W. 20th Street. Officers located the vehicle’s owner and discovered the woman’s 8-year-old child was inside the car at the time it was taken.

A broadcast with the vehicle and child’s description was immediately sent to all police units in the city. Shortly thereafter, police located the child at Ghent Elementary School unharmed.

The abducted child stated two unknown men got into the vehicle, asked the child what school he attended and then dropped the child off at Ghent Elementary School.

The abandoned vehicle was found approximately three miles from Ghent Elementary in the 5400 block of Silbert Road. The possible suspects remain at large.

The preliminary investigation has revealed the child was left unattended in the car while the mother went into work. The keys were left in the ignition and upon the mother’s arrival back to the parking lot, both the vehicle and her child were missing.

Norfolk Police Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.

At this time, police have not confirmed any charges against the mother.
