NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk police are investigating an afternoon motor vehicle accident that sent three people, including an officer, to the hospital.
Shortly after 1:00 p.m., an officer in a marked police vehicle was traveling with his lights and sirens activated in the 6900 block of Tidewater Drive. Another vehicle pulled in front of the police car, causing the marked unit to strike the civilian vehicle.
Medics responded to the location, and transported the officer as well as the two adults in the civilian car to area hospitals. All injuries are considered non-life threatening.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene, as police continue to complete the investigation.
At this time, the preliminary investigation has discovered the police vehicle was traveling northbound in the 6900 block of Tidewater Drive and attempted to cross Thole Street with the lights and sirens activated. The police vehicle stopped at the intersection and proceeded through once traffic in all directions had yielded to the emergency lights. A civilian car, occupied by two people, failed to yield and proceeded through the intersection, causing the vehicles to collide.
Charges have not been filed, but may be pending against the driver of the civilian vehicle once the investigation is complete.
