Norfolk police are investigating a multi-vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer and several cars.
Shortly after 2:00 this afternoon, police were called to the 6500 block of Tidewater Drive for a motor vehicle accident with injuries. Upon arrival, officers discovered a tractor trailer and six other vehicles involved in the crash. The driver of the tractor trailer was found in the cabin unresponsive and was immediately transported by medics to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The man was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Other minor injuries were reported, and patients were taken from the scene to DePaul Medical Center for evaluation.
The preliminary investigation has revealed the driver of the tractor trailer was traveling southbound in the 6500 block of Tidewater Drive. The trailer crossed the median and traveled into the oncoming northbound lanes. The tractor trailer struck two vehicles in the northbound lanes, causing a chain reaction as the oncoming traffic could not avoid the evolving scene.
Oncoming traffic then collided with the initial accident. In total, 7 vehicles including the tractor trailer, were involved in the accident.
At this time, the exact cause of death regarding the tractor trailer driver has not been determined. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause. As well, the man’s identity will not be released until his family has been properly notified.
Police continue to block Tidewater Drive from Norview Avenue through Widgeon Road. The roadway has been blocked indefinitely until the scene is cleared. Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to avoid the area.
There is no further information available for release at this time.
