[ARCHIVED] Deadly crash investigation underway on Hampton Boulevard

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk Police Traffic Fatality Team is investigating a two-car crash involving a police cruiser on Hampton Boulevard and Surrey Crescent.

Dispatchers received the emergency call shortly after 10 p.m Saturday night.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the police cruiser was traveling South on Hampton Boulevard, when the Toyota Prius pulled out from Surrey Crescent and collided with the cruiser.

The police officer was responding to a gunshot disturbance call with their emergency equipment activated.

The man driving the Prius was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other passengers in the vehicle.

The officer was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to survive. There were no other passengers in the vehicle.

No other vehicles were involved, and no other injuries were reported.

The Norfolk Police Traffic Fatality Team is conducting the investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for review.
