NORFOLK, Va. – The first summer holiday is almost here! Whether you are traveling to see family, going to the zoo, watching a baseball game, or heading to Ocean View for some beach fun, the Norfolk Police Department urges everyone to think about safety when making plans for the upcoming holiday weekend.

Holidays are fun and should be enjoyed, but enjoyed responsibly. Be aware of traffic construction along your route, pay attention while you are driving, and always buckle up! If alcohol is part of your holiday, ensure driving a vehicle or a boat is not.

Traffic Division officers will participate in roving and stationary saturation patrols and check points throughout the holiday weekend. Officers will be on alert for all traffic offenses, and be especially vigilant to aggressive driving violations.

Motorists are encouraged to be safe and courteous drivers. Speed, inattention, and impaired driving are leading causes of traffic crashes.

Please do your part. Obey the laws and buckle up.

For road condition reports, travelers can visit the city's website at www.norfolk.gov and click on maps to find the latest on construction areas throughout Norfolk.

Boating is a great pastime in our city and Harbor Patrol officers want everyone to enjoy themselves this weekend! Please be courteous to others on the water, wear a life jacket, and obey the laws regarding safe operation of a vessel. Be vigilant of “no wake zones” and never operate a boat while intoxicated.

“Memorial Day weekend is a wonderful time to enjoy your friends and family,” said Chief Michael Goldsmith. “I encourage everyone to be safe and don’t drink and drive. We want all of you to have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.”

Motorist or boaters in need of assistance or want to report a crime should use the Norfolk Police Department’s non-emergency number at 757-441-5610. Or, during an emergency situation, call 9-1-1.
