[ARCHIVED] Norfolk police investigate officer-involved shooting incident

NORFOLK, Va.- The Norfolk Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting incident that occurred shortly after 6:45 p.m. this evening in the Tidewater Gardens neighborhood.

Officers were investigating a stolen vehicle in the 400 block of Chapel Street, when they were alerted to a disturbance in a nearby residence.

Upon entering the residence, the officers came into contact with a man holding a knife. As police attempted to give verbal commands, the man lunged towards the officers with the weapon in hand.

The officers discharged their duty firearms, striking the man several times.

The man was transported from the 400 block of Chapel Street to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he later died.

At this time, the man’s identity is not available for public release.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

At this time, no further details are available for release, as this investigation remains in its preliminary stages.
