NORFOLK, Va. - Shortly before 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning, Norfolk police responded to the 900 block of Merrimac Avenue for an armed, suicidal person. Shots were fired by the man in need when police arrived on scene. No officers were injured. The man is now barricaded inside his residence and the Norfolk Police Department Crisis Negotiators are attempting to make contact with him to de-escalate the situation.
For public safety, police have closed E. Virginia Beach Boulevard from Ballentine Boulevard to Norchester Avenue. Neighboring streets will also experience temporary closures while the scene remains active. Please refer to the attached photo for exact roadway and intersection blocks.
A Civic Alert was sent to residents in the immediate area and they were encouraged to shelter in place while the situation is ongoing. The Norfolk Police Department appreciates our community members’ understanding as we work to resolve this situation peacefully.
