[ARCHIVED] Officer significantly injured after caustic substance thrown in face


NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) –  A Norfolk police sergeant was assaulted this morning with a caustic substance, causing significant injuries.

Shortly before 10:00 Monday morning, a man approached a Norfolk police sergeant in the 800 block of N. Military Highway and threw an unknown substance into the sergeant’s face.  The sergeant was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with what appears to be significant burn injuries.

The suspect was immediately taken into police custody near the scene.  His identity will be withheld until charges are officially secured.

The preliminary investigation has concluded the incident was unprovoked.  The investigation remains ongoing.
