NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – A man is in custody this morning following a standoff with police that began Friday evening.
Police confirm 48-year-old Donald Smiley held a woman against her will following a domestic violence incident. Smiley refused to release the woman and made threats against the woman’s and his welfare during the initial stages of the situation.
The Norfolk Police Hostage Crisis Negotiation Team was called to the scene. As police staged resources, surrounding roadways were closed for normal traffic patterns to prevent unnecessary foot and vehicle traffic.
Negotiators successfully made contact with Smiley and communication continued off and on throughout the morning hours.
Shortly before 7:00 Saturday morning, Smiley was taken into police custody without further incident. Smiley was charged with one count of abduction and may face charges for domestic assault.
The abducted woman was transported from the scene to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The woman’s injuries were sustained during the initial domestic assault situation and she is expected to make a full recovery.
Surrounding streets were re-opened for normal traffic patterns shortly after the standoff was peacefully resolved.
Donald Smiley's mug shot will be made available once he is properly processed at the Norfolk City Jail.
