[ARCHIVED] Man arrested in connection with fatal hit-and-run in Ocean View

NORFOLK, VA. (NPD) – Detectives have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that occurred in Ocean View last Friday evening.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m. Friday July 21, 2017, police responded to the 1400 block of East Ocean View Avenue for a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian.

When emergency crews arrived they found 54-year-old Erica Zankli lying in the roadway unconscious. Despite lifesaving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.  

The preliminary investigation has revealed that Zankli was riding her bicycle on East Ocean View Avenue when a Toyota Pickup struck her.  After the crash, the Toyota drove away from the scene.

As a result of the accident, Phillip J. Harrison, 37, was charged with Driving Under the Influence shortly after the incident occurred.  He was arrested at his residence in the 8400 block of Benningfield Court without incident.  

On July 25, 2017 detectives secured an additional charge of felony hit-and-run against Harrison.  He was arrested without incident the following afternoon on July 26, 2017.

As this investigation remains ongoing, police encourage anyone with information regarding this fatal crash to contact the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-UP.

Upon completion of the investigation, the findings will be turned over to the Office of the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney for review and determination of further charges.

Police have not released Harrison’s booking photo, as photo lines-up are still being conducted.
