[ARCHIVED] Motorcyclist seriously injured in car accident

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Norfolk police are investigating a motor vehicle accident that has left a man in serious condition.

Shortly after 1:30 this afternoon police and paramedics responded to Colley Avenue and West 21st Street for a motor vehicle accident possibly involving a pedestrian. When emergency crews arrived they found a man pinned under a red Toyota Corolla. First responders, with the assistant of several witnesses, were able to lift the car and free the 56-year-old man.

Paramedics transported him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries but he is expected to survive.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the motorcyclist had stopped at a red light with a red Toyota Corolla stopped behind him. A Toyota Prius, driven by a 37-year-old man stopped behind the Corolla. When the light turned green the driver of the Prius accelerated striking the Corolla, in turn the Corolla rolled forward striking the motorcycle. The motorcyclist fell off his motorcycle landing on the street. The Corolla then rolled over the man, pinning him under the car.

The drivers of both vehicles stayed on scene.

The driver of the Prius was charged with following too closely.

No other injuries were reported.
