NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – A woman died and a child was seriously injured in a crash Sunday afternoon, December 17, involving a Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads Fire and Emergency fire engine.
Both mother and child were transported to local hospitals following the crash and underwent emergency surgery for serious injuries. On Christmas Eve, the driver, Charlene Rios, 37, of the 7700 block of Harrisons Road, died from her injuries.
The crash occurred around 11:45 a.m. at the intersection of Hampton Boulevard and Baker Street.
The preliminary investigation has revealed the NSA fire truck was exiting the fire station at Baker Street with the emergency lights and sirens activated when an SUV driven by Rios traveling northbound on Hampton Blvd struck the fire engine.
The woman’s 12-year-old daughter was the only passenger in the SUV. She was taken to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, where she treated for serious injuries.
Four fire personnel were on the fire engine during the crash, two of which were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
There were no other vehicles involved. Police shut down traffic in both directions for several hours while they investigated the circumstances of the crash.
Norfolk police traffic division is leading the investigation. Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for review.
