Contractors for the Virginia Department of Transportation began work on the busy Northampton intersection in July 2017
NORFOLK – A project to increase capacity and improve access and safety at one of the highest volume interchanges in the region is complete six weeks ahead of schedule.
Contractors for the Virginia Department of Transportation began work on the busy Northampton intersection in July 2017 to increase off-ramp capacity and eliminate difficult arterial weaving movements on Northampton Boulevard. Safety along with traffic management were VDOT’s highest priorities.
The I-64/Northampton Interchange Project included widening the I-64 West exit ramp to Northampton Boulevard from two lanes to five lanes (two left turns, two right turns and the existing continuous flow lane was maintained with a more integrated movement onto Northampton Boulevard). The acceleration lane from Northampton Boulevard to I-64 West was lengthened and the I-64 East ramp to Northampton Boulevard was realigned to a signalized “T,” providing access to Northampton Boulevard in both directions.
The project was requested by the City of Norfolk in round one of Virginia’s SMART SCALE funding program and the improvements were administered by VDOT.
VDOT remains committed to on-time delivery of critical transportation projects like the I-64/Northampton Boulevard Interchange improvements and thanks the public for its patience while we worked diligently with our contractors, Branch Civil, to deliver the project.
