NORFOLK, VA –The long-term impact of a criminal record will prevent many people from obtaining jobs, housing, education, bank loans and public benefits, even if they’ve paid their debt to society. Hidden penalties or “collateral consequences” place an unanticipated burden on individuals trying the reenter the mainstream.
Former offenders, their families, reentry advocates and professionals are invited to join in the conversation about efforts to minimize the effect of these consequences at the Norfolk Reentry Council’s annual Town Hall on Tuesday, May 22nd, 10 am - 12:30 pm at the Norfolk Workforce Development Center, 201 E. Little Creek Road, Norfolk, VA 23505.
Panelists include former offenders, and representatives from the Norfolk Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and Equal Opportunity Employment Center. Information sessions will follow with updates on court costs, fines and restitution and details about a new Family Engagement Program.
