[ARCHIVED] Public Feedback Invited on Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Plans

Design public hearings to be held in Norfolk and Hampton

NORFOLK-The public is invited to view plans for ten miles of improvements along the Interstate 64 corridor between Norfolk and Hampton, including a new Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and a wider interstate.

The project, designed to ease congestion with a new tunnel and a wider I-64, also calls for the replacement or rebuilding of 32 bridges. The new tunnel and its approach bridges will accommodate four lanes of traffic for a total of eight lanes of capacity across the water.

Design Public Hearings will be held:

August 15, 2018
Ocean View Elementary School
350 West Government Avenue
Norfolk, VA 23503
and
August 16, 2018
Saint Mary Star of the Sea School
14 North Willard Avenue
Hampton, VA 23663

Both meetings are scheduled from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. in an open-house format with no formal presentation. VDOT representatives will be present to discuss the project and to answer questions.

Two teams are competing to build the tunnel. They are Hampton Roads Capacity Constructors and Hampton Roads Connector Partners. The contract will be awarded in early 2019.

The design-build project, which addresses one of the region’s most significant chokepoints, is estimated to cost between $3.3 and 3.8 billion, and is being funded by the Hampton Roads Transportation Accountability Commission (HRTAC) and anticipated state and federal revenues.
