NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) - Norfolk Police community outreach initiative,"Five-0 and Fades" is prepared for an epic giveback of 400 free haircuts to school age boys 5-18 years old, at the 2nd Annual Five-O and Fades Back to School Haircuts event, Sunday, September 2, 2018, 10am-5pm, at the Southside STEM Academy, 1106 Campostella Road, Norfolk. The first 300 school age boys to receive haircuts will get a back pack!

In addition to free haircuts, there will be numerous opportunities for youth and their families to engage with Norfolk officers in a block party atmosphere of games, free food and fun activities to include K-9 and bomb robot demonstrations, and social services information. This year our collective of community partners for back to school outreach, has grown to include 7-Eleven, SunTrust Bank and A Mother’s Cry 16, along with returning partners, the Five-O and Fades barber’s and Norfolk Public Schools. Each community partner serves with resources akin to the support of an extended family member, to positively encourage and engage students and their families for a new school year.

Chief of Police, L.D. Boone knows this type of outreach creates positive civic synergy. “I’m grateful our officers and community partners are on one accord to genuinely touch students. We take our outreach opportunities seriously, especially with our youth. We don’t just give kids a back pack, a pat on the back and say, “good luck!” We are far more invested, and better than that! I believe in providing education with impact while we have their attention. There will be information and conversations about gun violence through our partnership with A Mother’s Cry 16, a non-profit, anti-gun violence organization of mother’s who have lost their children to bullets. This is what a true community win looks like when we gather and partner in the best interest of each other, for meaningful outcomes!”

The Five-0 and Fades outreach initiative was launched January 2017, with a "live" community barbershop forum, for discussions on difficult topics between officers and young men. Several Norfolk barbershops serve as the backdrop for the conversations that assist to bridge the gap for mutual respect.

Youth must be accompanied by an adult to receive a haircut.
Adults are not limited to the number of youth they may bring to receive haircuts!
