Hampton Roads Transit will suspend ferry and light rail operations on Wednesday, September 12, but continue regular bus service across the region as the agency begins to wind down service in anticipation of Hurricane Florence.
Norfolk, VA - Hampton Roads Transit will suspend ferry and light rail operations on Wednesday, September 12, but continue regular bus service across the region as the agency begins to wind down service in anticipation of Hurricane Florence.
To help people in the hours before the storm lands, HRT will suspend fare collection on its bus system on Wednesday.
On Thursday, September 13, HRT will suspend all transit services until Monday, September 17, because the region is expected to endure severe flooding, power outages and high winds caused by the hurricane.
“Hampton Roads Transit is preparing for the onset of an intense weather event and we encourage all residents to take appropriate precautions,” said President and CEO William Harrell. “As soon as conditions improve, and streets are clear, we’ll resume service.”
Suspending transit services is a major disruption for thousands of customers who board daily. HRT has an obligation to preserve its fleet as it will play an important role in the storm recovery.
HRT expects to resume regular service on Monday based on conditions along its numerous routes. HRT will announce its service plan by Sunday at 2 p.m.
Paratransit customers are encouraged not to schedule trips beginning Wednesday and to make other transportation arrangements through Monday.
All Administrative offices will close Thursday, September 13th, and will re-open Monday, September 17th, during normal business hours.
Downtown Norfolk, Silverleaf, Newport News, and Hampton Transit Centers will close midnight, Wednesday, September 12th, and will tentatively re-open Monday, September 17th, during normal business hours.
