Gas transmission safety in Virginia is regulated by the State Corporation Commission (SCC). The SCC has approved the design of the Southside Connector and inspects it regularly.
City staff have confirmed with the SCC that the Southside Connector is no different and no less necessary than the line that runs down the street in DC alongside many of the nation’s most prominent museums.
Additionally, Virginia Natural Gas states and City staff have confirmed with the SCC that in keeping with federal guidelines the pipeline is “monitored by a gas control center 24/7/365. Pressures and flows are actively monitored, all valves on the pipeline can be remotely shut off by the gas control operator. The pipeline is designed with both a cathodic protection system and an AC mitigation system. Additional maintenance includes an annual walking survey over the pipeline, monthly aerial survey over the pipeline, annual valve station and regulator station inspections, quarterly reading of cathodic protection and AC mitigation systems to insure they are working properly.”
