[ARCHIVED] Babysitter charged in death of 18-month-old child

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – A woman has been charged with murder following the death of an 18-month-old child left in her care.

35-year-old Ashadiya’Xolani Brooks, of the 1100 block of Porter Road, has been charged with second degree murder and is currently being held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond.

On October 23, 2018 around 12:15 p.m., police and paramedics responded to a residence in the 1100 block of Porter Road for a report of an unresponsive child. When first responders arrived, they located the unresponsive 18-month-old child. Medics transported the child to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters for treatment.

Two days after arriving at the hospital, the child was pronounced deceased and police investigated the child's death as undetermined. The autopsy, conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk, ruled the death a homicide.

As a result of the investigation, Brooks was arrested and charged with murder on November 1, 2018.

Detectives have not released any other details surrounding this case; however, they ask anyone with information to contact the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or submit a tip through the P3Tips mobile app.
