[ARCHIVED] Governor’s School for the Arts Graduate Named as Norfolk’s Artist In-Residence

The City received over 100 applications, and five finalists were interviewed by a diverse panel of city staff and community arts partners (Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, Governor’s School for the Arts and Chrysler Museum.

NORFOLK, VA – City Manager Douglas Smith is pleased to announce that the City of Norfolk has selected Jason Akira Somma as its inaugural Artist In-Residence.  Somma is an interdisciplinary visual artist with classical training in dance and choreography.  He has also worked in photography, video engineering, among other artistic mediums. Born in Norfolk and a graduate of the Governor’s School for the Arts and Virginia Commonwealth University, Somma is the first American recipient of the prestigious Rolex Arts Initiative Award and has been selected to exhibit his short film this summer at the Times Square Art Alliance festival.

This was a very competitive process – the City received over 100 applications, and five finalists were interviewed by a diverse panel of city staff and community arts partners (Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, Governor’s School for the Arts and Chrysler Museum. The program begins April 1st and is a 10-12 month term. Jason will work alongside city employees and the community to reimagine aspects of civic life, stimulate outside-the-box thinking, weave artistic spirit into city government and help write the next chapter of Norfolk’s history through significant artistic contributions.  He will also serve as an advisor on planning for major projects, ensuring that art is considered and integrated into the project.
