NORFOLK, VA – On Friday, May 3rd, 9 AM – 1 PM the City is hosting a ‘Paint the Park’ beautification event at Lafayette Park. Several local businesses, organizations, and artists are joining forces to improve the park through a variety of service projects.
15 local artists who designed vibrant artwork for trash cans in the park will paint their designs on the cans with assistance from volunteers from local businesses. This pilot project will test whether or not the artwork will increase visibility of the cans and encourage park visitors to practice good stewardship by properly disposing of their waste in the cans.
During the event volunteers will also plant a rain garden to address nuisance flooding next to the City’s Ernie Morgan Environmental Action Center, prune trees, mulch the playground, improve the eco and memorial gardens, and more.
At noon, the volunteer event will conclude with a mural dedication for several murals installed around the park this spring created by artist Alison Bachmann and a group of 2018 City summer interns.
Joysicles Gourmet Popsicles will be onsite serving up their creative pops to anyone looking to treat themselves after a morning of hard work.
Paint the Park is a regional kickoff event for the Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest community improvement program. The City is excited about, and grateful for, the partnerships fueling this beautification project.
