[ARCHIVED] Two men arrested in connection with double shooting at MacArthur Center

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Two men have been arrested today by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force in Atlanta, Georgia in connection with a shooting that occurred inside MacArthur Mall on Monday night.  

Around 8:20 p.m., police were called to MacArthur Center located at 300 Monticello Avenue for a gunshot disturbance. When police arrived, they located a 56-year-old woman suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. She was transported to the hospital and is expected to be okay.

While police were on-scene, a 23-year-old man arrived at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.MolekReed

Detectives have arrested Molek Alcantara, 23, of the 1000 block of Garfield Street in Portsmouth and Daquan C. Reed, 22, of the 30 block of Holley Hill Lane in Portsmouth on charges in connection with the shooting.  

Alcantara has been charged with two counts each of malicious wounding and using a firearm in the commission of felony, and one count each of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and carrying a concealed weapon.

Reed has been charged with accessory after the fact.

"The women and men of the Norfolk Police Department are relentless in protecting and serving our citizens and bringing those to justice who break the law" said Police Chief Larry D. Boone. "We continue to lead by example in partnering with the community and other law enforcement agencies when necessary to keep our communities safe. I cannot emphasize enough about the urgent need for Actionable Leadership to address this public health crisis starting with providing our youth, particularly our young African-American men, with positive alternatives to resolve conflict."

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the two suspects were walking inside the mall on the lower-level and encountered another young man. The three exchanged words, and subsequently, the 23-year-old man was shot. During the incident, a woman who was an innocent bystander was also shot.

MacArthur Center was placed on lock-down for approximately one hour while police investigated.

Monday night, Norfolk Police Chief Larry D. Boone said in a press conference, that this was an unfortunate, isolated incident.
