NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Norfolk police are investigating a shooting that left a Maury student injured Friday afternoon.
Today at approximately 12:15 p.m., a 17-year-old Maury High School student sustained a gunshot wound to the hand while attending class.
Detectives have determined that the student was in possession of a handgun which accidentally discharged. The student’s teacher was made aware of the injury and the student was referred to the school nurse’s office. The school was placed on lock-down while police investigated the incident.
The juvenile was taken to the Children’s Hospital for The King’s Daughters for treatment. His injuries are non-life threatening.
There were no other injuries reported.
Charges are pending against the injured juvenile.
Norfolk Police Chief Larry Boone stated, “Gun Violence among our youths continues to be a problem in Hampton Roads. Fortunately, this young man was not seriously injured and no one else was hurt during the incident.”
