[ARCHIVED] Confederate Statue is Removed from Downtown Monument

NORFOLK, VA – In just under two hours, contractors removed the statue, known as Johnny Reb, at the top of the downtown Confederate Monument.

On June 11, Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander announced plans to remove the statue in the interest of public safety due to recent events at the local and national level.  The Mayor expressed grave concerns that the statue’s continued presence could lead to injury or violence and therefore must be immediately removed.

The statue stands nearly 16 feet tall and weighs approximately 1,500 pounds.  Two construction cranes were used to remove the massive bronze statue.

The City will hold a public hearing on July 7, 2020 regarding the ultimate disposition of the monument and observe the required thirty-day period to receive further comment on these matters prior to rendering a final decision.

The City of Norfolk reiterates Mayor Alexander’s call for continued peaceful protests at this site and other locations within the City.
