[ARCHIVED] NPD featured in Police Chief Magazine for its leadership, community engagement, & crime suppression

Norfolk, Va. (NPD) – Norfolk Police have been featured in this month’s International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) – Police Chief Magazine for its leadership, community engagement, and crime suppression.

The six-page article titled, “Building Social Capital – Youth Engagement in “At-Opportunity” Communities”, highlights several Norfolk Police community-based programs that have shown to inspire and develop authentic relationships between the police and the community they serve.

“It’s an honor to be acknowledged in an international publication for the positive influence your officers have made in the community,” said Chief Larry D. Boone. “The Norfolk Police Department has come a long way in last 4 years when it comes to interacting with the community in a non-enforcement setting. As you can see in the article, these aren’t cookie cutter programs; they are designed with the needs of the community in mind and the impact speaks for itself.”

Norfolk’s recent historic reductions in crime were also featured in the article as a measurable outcome of NPD’s intentional community outreach programs. “Building authentic relationships are paramount in crime reduction,” said Chief Boone. “I am so proud of the women and men of the Norfolk Police Department; their commitment to community engagement has led us to where we are today. When the community see’s your willingness and desire to support them, trust and legitimacy soon follow.”

Since 1934, The IACP’s Police Chief Magazine has served as the law enforcement profession’s reference for best practices in policing, research, and equipment. The IACP has over 31,000 members in 160 countries. Please click on the link below to read, “Building Social Capital – Youth Engagement in “At-Opportunity” Communities”.
