NORFOLK, VA – Governor Ralph Northam today announced that CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, will maintain its North American headquarters in the City of Norfolk, with a planned investment of more than $30M to renovate its HQ, retaining 655 jobs in Norfolk, and will grow its presence in Virginia, resulting in the creation of more than 400 new jobs.
“CMA CGM’s decision to continue direct investment and support for jobs in Norfolk is a testament to our role as a hub for innovation in international maritime and logistics. Their 15-year presence has proven Norfolk’s role as a platform for regional business development and catalyst for job growth for the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander.
This news comes on the heels of another 2021 business expansion and retention announcement by the Governor’s office of Tabet Manufacturing in the City of Norfolk. The City of Norfolk worked with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) and the Hampton Roads Alliance. The Port of Virginia and the General Assembly’s Major Employment and Investment (MEI) Commission will be adding financial and workforce development assistance.
Virginia was selected following a competitive site-selection search that included competing markets in other states. The North American Headquarters of this global ocean freight giant is in the Lake Wright Executive Center and plans call for the existing office building to be completely renovated. Most of the new positions will be in Hampton Roads.
“CMA CGM is recognized as a world leader in shipping and logistics and this investment further validates the City Norfolk as the place to be for international maritime, transportation, and logistics companies,” said Jared Chalk, Director of Economic Development
Per the press release from Governor Northam:
“The company will invest a projected $36 million to expand customer care operations in Hampton Roads, refurbish their existing headquarters, expand operations in the Commonwealth, and establish in Arlington County ZEBOX, a start-up incubator and accelerator initiated by Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group. ZEBOX will accompany innovative start-ups in the development of new technologies for transportation, logistics, mobilities, and industry 4.0.”
