[ARCHIVED] Chesapeake man arrested; security guard injured following shooting on Lake Herbert Drive

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Norfolk Police are continuing to investigate a shooting that happened Monday afternoon at the Social Security Administration Building. 

Around 4:00 p.m. on February 2, 2021 Officers responded to the Social Security Administration Building located at 5850 Lake Herbert Drive for the report of a shooting in progress. When police arrived, they found two men who were both suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim, a 52-year-old man who was working as a security guard at the time of the shooting, was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

The suspect, 44-year-old, William D. Rankin, of Chesapeake, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

Rankin has been charged with malicious wounding, shooting in an occupied building, use of a firearm, and firearm by felon. He is currently in the hospital receiving medical treatment; however, will be transported to Norfolk City Jail when released.

This is still an ongoing investigation, and detectives have not released the motive surrounding this shooting.
