[ARCHIVED] Norfolk Set to Honor Olympic Silver Medalist Keyshawn Davis

NORFOLK, VA – Lightweight division boxer Keyshawn Davis brought home the silver medal from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In honor of this great achievement, the City of Norfolk will celebrate Davis with a ‘Welcome Home Parade’ on Saturday, August 21, at 10:30 a.m. The parade processional will begin at Harbor Park and end at the Norfolk Scope Plaza, at the corner of Monticello Avenue and E. Charlotte Street. City officials, Keyshawn Davis and his family will give remarks at the Scope Plaza at 11:15 a.m.

“Norfolk is extremely proud of Keyshawn Davis and his incredible performance at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. He made history this summer, not just for our city but also as a member of the most successful US Olympic Boxing Team this century, and we look forward to honoring our champion this Saturday!” said Kenneth Cooper Alexander, Ph.D.

Davis’ boxing journey started thirteen years ago, at age nine, when his mother, Wanda Davis, came to a city gym to inquire about her sons enrolling in the Recreation, Parks & Open Space Team Norfolk Boxing program. The next day, Kelvin, Keyshawn and Keon began boxing. At age 22, Keyshawn went to the Olympic Games with an amateur record of 196-10.

Davis made his Olympic debut on July 24 with a 5-0 unanimous decision against Enrico Lacruz from the Netherlands. On July 30, Davis won his bout against Sofiane Oumiha, the reigning silver medalist, of France. On August 2, he defeated Gabil Mamedov of Russia. During the semifinals, Davis was unanimously named the winner of the bout against Armenia’s Hovhannes Bachov. On August 8, he lost a very close split decision in the final bout to Andy Cruz from Cuba and brought home the silver medal.

Davis is the second Olympic medalist boxer from Norfolk, Pernell ‘Sweet Pea’ Whitaker was the first. Davis joins a list of notable names who won an Olympic medal in the lightweight division: Oscar De La Hoya (1992), Pernell ‘Sweet Pea’ Whitaker (1984) and Howard Davis (1976).

Keyshawn Davis and his family will ride in vehicles with police escorts through the following parade processional route: starting at Harbor Park proceeding west on Water Street, north on St. Paul’s Boulevard, west on Main Street, north on Granby Street, east on Bute Street and north on Monticello Avenue to pull up along the Scope Plaza at E. Charlotte Street.
