First Annual "The Community Connect" Resource Expo presented by Ward 3 leaders and community advocates offers vaccinations, information, and resources for Norfolk residents
NORFOLK, VA—School Board Vice Chairman Carlos J. Clanton and Councilwoman Mamie Johnson (Ward 3) jointly host the first “Community Connect” Resource Expo that will provide information, resources, and services essential to the Ward 3 Community and the Greater City of Norfolk on Saturday, August 28, 2021, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Ward 3 Community site in Broad Creek (2600 E. Princess Anne Rd., Norfolk, VA 23504).
This first annual event will provide a grassroots collection of resources from local businesses, agencies, faith leaders and organizations to serve the students, families, seniors, and neighborhoods with limited access to these programs or specialized services. During the event, COVID-19 vaccinations will be available with an opportunity to win a trip to Antigua. Distribution of free backpacks for students in grades K-12, free haircuts by Five-0 Fades, onsite job hiring opportunities, health screenings for all ages, rental and utilities assistance, food trucks, games and over 75 other vendors providing services around the areas of Education, Employment, Health, and Housing.
“Although this event is in the Norfolk Ward 3 community, this “The Community Connect“ Resource Expo is for the entire Norfolk community, and citizens are encouraged and welcome to attend,” shared Councilwoman Mamie Johnson. School Board Vice Chairman Clanton said, “Whether you want to lend a helping hand or you need a helping hand, this is where you get connected.” Attendees are encouraged to register in advance to avoid lines at www.thecommunityconnect.org, or onsite registrations are accepted.
The event will kick off with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at noon with Councilwoman Johnson and Vice Chairman Clanton and live music provided by the “Better By Tuesday” band at 3:30 p.m. Special guests include Olympic Silver Medalist and Norfolk native Keyshawn Davis, along with local, state, and federal elected officials who will greet attendees at 2:00 p.m.
Attendees are required to follow the current COVID-19 protocols requiring face masks and social distancing created with the assistance of the Norfolk Public Health Department. Free face masks/hand sanitizers are available to all attendees.
This event is being hosted by the City of Norfolk and is sponsored by Dominion Energy in partnership with the following organizations: STOP Inc., Sentara Health, Virginia Department of Health (VDH), CHKD, G.W.C. Brown Legacy Education Foundation, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated – Alpha Phi Lambda Chapter.
