[ARCHIVED] 2021-2022 Slover Library Lecture Series New Name & Continued Notable Speakers

Brinkley Family recognized in third annual series

Norfolk, VA - Whether it is a critical local issue like sea level rise or the exploration of Hampton Roads history, the latest Brinkley Family Memorial Lecture Series presents stories about passionate people with determination and grit.

Virginia Beach author Bill Geroux discusses The Mathews Men: Seven Brothers and the War Against Hitler’s U-Boats on September 16, 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Virginia’s Mathews County has been a cradle of merchant sea captains and mariners since before the American Revolution. Serving on freighters and tankers throughout WWII, they became prime targets for German U-boats trying to choke off the Allied supply line.  Hear about how the mariners faced torpedo explosions, flaming oil slicks, storms, frigid water, shark attacks and harrowing lifeboat odysseys.

Now in its third year, Slover Library’s lecture series has honored Catherine “Kate” Lee Brinkley, a professional librarian at the City of Norfolk’s Kirn Memorial Library. She loved people and was dedicated to educating the citizens of Norfolk through the many services and programs of the Norfolk Public Library system. After the death of her son, Ned, in 2020 the series was renamed to honor the Brinkley family.  The series brings authors to Norfolk to keep the spirit of community discourse alive and to celebrate recently published books of national acclaim. Each in-person lecture is free and open to the public, and a reception and book signing are available at all three events.
