NORFOLK, VA – This Sunday, October 31, from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., there will be police controlled intermittent traffic stoppages and lane shifts at the intersection of Virginia Beach Boulevard and Newtown Road. This is due to the activation of the new traffic signal (and deactivation of the existing signal) as part of Norfolk's first SMART SCALE Project.
The Virginia Beach Boulevard Improvements project expands the capacity of Virginia Beach Boulevard from four to six lanes, in a critical segment that connects an eight-lane section in Norfolk and a six-lane section in Virginia Beach.
The project removes portions of an outdated feeder road system that presents operational and safety challenges along Virginia Beach Boulevard between Clarence Street and Newtown Road. The new cross-section will widen the median, improve drainage, as well as add sidewalks and planting strips along this heavily utilized transit corridor.
