[ARCHIVED] Design Public Hearing To Be Held On Proposed Plans For Hampton Roads Express Lanes Norfolk Segment

Public invited to attend virtually and in-person to learn about plans for Express Lanes

NORFOLK – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a design public hearing virtually Wednesday, Dec. 1, and in-person Thursday, Dec. 2 to share information and receive feedback on the proposed design plans to repurpose I-64 in both directions from approximately 1 mile east of the I-264 interchange to 0.4 miles west of the I-564 interchange in Norfolk. The three existing general purpose (GP) lanes and shoulders will be converted to one part-time, high-occupancy express shoulder lane and three GP lanes for a project length of approximately 9 miles.

In-Person Design Public Hearing

 Thursday, Dec. 2, 4-7 p.m.

Residence Inn Norfolk Airport

1590 N. Military Highway, Norfolk, VA 23502

The purpose of the meeting is to give citizens an opportunity to review the project exhibits on display, meet with VDOT representatives and provide input. The virtual meeting will include a presentation by VDOT project engineers with the opportunity for the public to ask questions verbally and via an online chat format. The in-person public hearing will be an open-house format meeting with no formal presentation. Media are invited to attend both sessions.

Express Lanes are designed to transport more motorists through the region while helping to alleviate congestion and allowing motorists travel options. This project also includes widening and rehabilitating the bridges over Tidewater Drive and replacing the bridges over Chesapeake Boulevard. Several existing bridges along the corridor will be rehabilitated, and spot widening will occur to accommodate the typical section along the corridor. Comments from the public regarding the proposed project may be submitted during the live presentation, afterwards using an online form, or via email by Dec. 12, 2021 to Claudia.Walsh@VDOT.Virginia.gov. Please reference “I-64 Hampton Roads Express Lanes Segment 1A/1B Comment” in the subject line.
