[ARCHIVED] Norfolk Places in Top 10 of Annual Digital Cities Survey for Sixth Consecutive Year

Winning cities lead the way nationally in use of technology to support resident services

NORFOLK, VA – For the sixth consecutive year, the City of Norfolk placed in the top 10 cities of its size in the annual Digital Cities survey.

The Center for Digital Government (CDG) announced the winners of the 2020 Digital Cities Survey last week. The annual survey recognizes cities using technology to tackle social challenges, enhance services, strengthen cybersecurity, and more.

Norfolk finished in a tie for tenth with Pasadena, California among cities with populations between 125,000 and 249,999 people.

On their website, the survey cited the city’s silver certification from the What Works Cities program, which evaluates how well cities are managed by measuring the extent to which city leaders incorporate data and evidence in their decision-making to improve residents’ lives, as a major reason for the ranking. The certification was due in part to the IT Department contributing staff to the city’s data team and helping get new data stories published to Norfolk’s Open Data portal

The city’s cybersecurity efforts, including a reported 500 percent increase in the number of suspected phishing emails identified and reviewed during the survey period, were also cited as reasons for Norfolk’s ranking.

The Center for Digital Government is a national research and advisory institute focused on technology policy and best practices in state and local government.
