[ARCHIVED] Norfolk Police Department announces the redistricting of Police Precincts

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – The Norfolk Police Department is redistricting its precincts under a newly adopted plan aimed to improve overall police services and daily operations.

Since 2006, the Department’s Field Operations Bureau has been made up of three police precincts that were broken down into 28 patrol districts. By redistricting, the Department will now operate two police precincts and have a total of 29 patrol districts.

As the City of Norfolk continues to change and grow, the Police Department must adapt in order to accommodate the City’s need for police services. The redistricting of precincts will allow for a better distribution of resources, greater police coverage, and a more streamlined response for officers who are responding to calls within each of the designated precincts.

In addition to a new car district, the redistricting plan will also add three roving patrol units, and a tactical unit to each of the precincts. The tactical unit will focus specifically on areas within the precincts which are experiencing an increase in crime.

“The boundaries within which our officers patrol are more than just lines on a page. These boundaries represent our neighborhoods where the availability and response time of an officer can have an impact on a citizen’s quality of life, said Chief Larry D. Boone. My intended goal of this plan is to allow for a greater number of officers within each precinct to answer calls for service.”

Throughout the transition, the Norfolk Police Department will continue to reevaluate the redistricting plan to ensure citizens continue receiving the most efficient and effective police services possible. Although these changes were necessary, the redistricting of the precincts was designed to allow most officers to remain working in the same communities where they have built authentic relationships.
